And Huhtamäki’s raw materials are priced in dollars?

Two years ago, Coca-Cola was being negative in its communications, saying that Americans were no longer visiting fast-food restaurants like they used to. As far as I understand, the situation has already leveled off since then, and not even Coca-Cola has been as negative as it was a couple of years back. McDonald’s and the like have brought new, cheaper value meals to the market. Maybe demand for Huhtamäki will even improve now. The dollar has also strengthened nicely against the euro. It’s true that they are burning through retirement savings to fund consumption.

I came across a clip saying that 6% of Americans have had to make early withdrawals from their 401(k) retirement savings.  Early withdrawals trigger a penalty, so people hardly take that money out for no reason.  The money goes toward mandatory expenses like mortgages, etc.  Gemini confirmed this, and apparently, that 6% is an all-time high.  You can forget about McDonald’s junk food when you can’t even afford your housing.  And apparently, fast food chain prices have risen even faster than general inflation, which also limits visits to them.  In principle, I’d be interested in adding to Huhtamäki, but the exposure to the inequality of the US economy (K-shaped economy) is quite significant.

Could it be that nearly 50% of the annual earnings come from the Americas? Money is tight over there, so people are cutting back on buying burgers… I read something like that somewhere.

I was indeed on a call myself a short while ago, but I didn’t see that it or any other news flow created an immediate need to alter my view. There might certainly be some fine-tuning to do on the quarterly forecasts (as almost always), but I usually do this myself in connection with the preview comment, provided there really is no reason to immediately touch the recommendation, target price, and/or the forecasts for the coming years as well. If I compare the consensus I received by email after Q2 with the consensus dated October 6 on Huhtamäki’s website, at the adjusted EBIT level, the Q3 as well as the 2026–2028 consensus forecasts have come down by 2–3% (and the ex-dividend date indeed directly explains about a 2% drop in the share price). Thus, consensus also doesn’t seem to think there has been any huge drama in recent news flow, although accelerating inflation and rising interest rates (incl. the impact on consumer behavior and logistics costs, for example) are naturally well-known negative drivers for Huhtamäki. At a quick glance, other stocks in the value chain have also been under pressure recently, which is likely at least partly due to these macro factors. A few recommendation and target price revisions (in a negative direction) have certainly been published recently. I don’t have access to these reports, so I can’t comment on the rationale behind the changes. I suspect that some banking colleagues, and also their clients or investors in general, might be playing the quarterly game (i.e., whether Q3 EPS beats/misses consensus and positioning accordingly), which is why trigger fingers might be a bit itchier regarding short-term news flow, for instance. I want to emphasize that this is merely a personal suspicion, and of course, I don’t have any facts on this either.
