SSAB starts construction of new quenching line in Oxelösund
SSAB today marked the start of construction of its new quenching line in Oxelösund. The investment of SEK 3.3 billion, announced in May 2026, will expand capacity for SSAB's advanced high-strength wear and protection steels. Production is planned to begin in 2030.

Quenching is a heat-treatment process that rapidly cools steel to achieve exceptional hardness and strength. It is a critical process for many of SSAB's most advanced wear-resistant and protection steels, including products such as Hardox® and Armox®. The new quenching line will expand SSAB's capacity for these advanced steel products.
The new quenching line is part of SSAB's strategy to strengthen premium leadership and expand its advanced steel offering. The investment will add approximately 100,000 tonnes of annual capacity for SSAB's Special Steels most advanced and value-creating products.

Today's groundbreaking event marks an important milestone as the project moves from planning into execution. The event brought together SSAB management, local stakeholders and decision-makers to celebrate the start of construction of a key investment that will strengthen SSAB's leadership in premium steels and expand capacity for advanced wear-resistant and protection steels serving demanding industrial, safety and defense-related applications.
