Wavetrain Systems Achieves Type Approval from Network Rail in UK – Opening Up For Commercial Roll-Out

NTGPress release16.07.2026, 13.45

Wavetrain Systems AS today announced that Network Rail has granted type approval for the Wavetrain OMSL (Overlay Miniature Stop Light), Certificate of Acceptance, covering the complete system including train detection, warning lights, and audible sounder. This approval represents a critical commercial milestone, unlocking access to one of Europe’s largest and most safety‑regulated rail markets.

The approval confirms that the Wavetrain OMSL meets Network Rail’s stringent technical and safety requirements for use at level crossings and will now be deployed in operational service, where it provides warning to the public through visual and audible alerts. This represents a significant premise for roll-out and demonstrates the maturity of Wavetrain’s end‑to‑end level crossing safety solution.

The Wavetrain OMSL is an AI‑powered acoustic train detection system designed to efficiently improve safety at level crossings. All system components are installed directly at the crossing, eliminating the need for extensive civil works. The system integrates with standard warning measures and is designed to deliver reliable performance across a wide range of traffic profiles and environmental conditions, all while maintaining low installation and life‑cycle costs at large scale.

The approval follows several years of extensive development, testing, and assessment program carried out in close cooperation with Network Rail and independent safety assessors. The latest system version incorporates advanced machine learning algorithms that improve robustness in complex operational environments and deliver consistent warning times in line with Network Rail’s rigorous requirements.

Executive Commentary
CEO of Wavetrain, Pål E. Bratlie, said:

“Receiving type approval from Network Rail represents a company-defining milestone Wavetrain. For the first time, our complete OMSL solution — including train detection, lights and sounder — is now approved for operational deployment to the public on the UK rail network. This approval confirms that our technology meets the highest safety standards and positions Wavetrain for commercial deployment in one of the world’s most advanced railway markets.”

Network Rail manages one of the largest rail infrastructures in Europe, with approximately 6,000 level crossings across the UK, of which about two thirds have currently no warning system installed. The OMSL solution expands the range of approved safety measures available to Network Rail and offers a flexible and cost-efficient option for improving safety at crossings where traditional infrastructure solutions may be impractical or cost prohibitive.

The approval further strengthens Wavetrain’s position in other international rail markets The company has already active customer processes in several countries, including Ireland, Austria, Sweden and Australia.
