SSAB: The world's first bridge built with decarbonized steel inaugurated in Lund

SSAB

SSAB, together with Peab and bridge manufacturer Hjalmarssons, has delivered the world's first bridge built using SSAB Zero™ steel. The pedestrian and bicycle bridge has now been installed over the E22 highway in Lund, Sweden, as part of the Swedish Transport Administration's major infrastructure upgrade in the area.

The green-painted bridge is 39 meters long and weighs just over 30 tonnes. Approximately 95 percent of the steel used in the bridge consists of SSAB Zero™.

"Collaborating with customers and partners such as Peab and Hjalmarssons is key to accelerating the transition to more sustainable steel constructions. This bridge shows that it is already today possible to reduce the carbon footprint substantially, while maintaining the same high standards for performance and processing," says Matts Nilsson, Vice President and Head of Sales, SSAB Europe.

SSAB Zero™ is made using recycled steel and fossil-free electricity and biogas, resulting in fossil carbon emissions in SSAB's production of less than 0.05 kg CO2e per kg of steel within Scope 1 and 2 according to the GHG Protocol.

"Environmental requirements have been high in this project, and using SSAB Zero™ has reduced carbon emissions by 70 percent compared with a bridge made of conventional steel, corresponding to a saving of around 46 tonnes of CO2 emissions. This bridge is a good example of how climate ambitions can be turned into reality," says Tom Nordlindh, Construction Manager at Peab.

The bridge was manufactured by Hjalmarssons in Sölvesborg. Since SSAB Zero™ has the same properties and processing characteristics as conventional steel, the production process could be carried out without any special adjustments.

"We haven't worked with SSAB Zero™ before, but there has been no difference compared to processing conventional steel. It works in exactly the same way. Being part of driving development toward more sustainable materials is something we highly value," says Fredrik Andersson, CEO of Hjalmarssons.
