Apple has been lagging behind in the AI race, and the iOS AI features presented long ago haven’t been rolled out on schedule. Their in-house development has clearly been struggling. Giants like Google have invested heavily in AI, and at some point, these investments need to contribute to the bottom line. Google gets a major customer and puts its AI systems into consumers’ pockets and onto their desks. Apple, on the other hand, hasn’t embarked on massive AI investments with its own data centers and language models, so they haven’t had to burn huge sums of money upfront. I see this as positive news for Apple. In my opinion, it doesn’t make sense for every consumer device company to start building their own AI infrastructure. Rent it as a service and switch providers once it becomes clear which of the big AI houses will take a dominant position. And there’s nothing stopping them from developing their own systems later once the technology is more mature and cheaper. It’s perhaps similar to how Apple used only Qualcomm modems for a long time, simply because they were superior to their own attempts. Since then, they have gradually introduced their own modem tech into their devices as it has become good enough.
