Siili Solutions operates in the IT sector. The company develops and integrates software for information systems, and offers services related to the development of technology platforms, information management, IT architecture, and various project management. The expertise is found in data management, analysis, and artificial intelligence. The company was founded in 2005 and is headquartered in Helsinki.

Over the last few years, the share price has been weighed down by major sellers like Erina, whose divestments started already around the €14–15 mark. Another seller has been Siili founder Timo Luhtaniemi, though he seems to have stopped reducing his position as the price dropped too low. Timo mentioned earlier somewhere that he was reallocating investments toward higher expected returns. Recently, Elo (a customer of Siili) has sold a lot; one wonders if their use of Siili’s services is also decreasing or has already decreased. Additionally, a certain fund has significantly reduced its holding. The market tends to overshoot in both directions. At the very least, Elisa’s CEO mentioned in an Inderes interview that they have reduced the use of external IT services—they are also a customer of Siili. Companies have been trimming their cost structures, but usually, at some point, the money taps open up again for investments. It’s hard to say when the turnaround will happen, but with a market cap of around €19 million, the sentiment around Siili is extremely pessimistic, and based on the share price, there is hardly any perceived future for the industry. Fear tends to take over, and that is also when there can be an opportunity for returns—when you are alone in “the queue.” Granted, this has been a terrible investment over the last few years and has weighed heavily on portfolio performance.

Revenue has actually held up surprisingly well in a difficult market; judging by the share price performance, you’d think revenue had at least halved in a year, but that isn’t the case. The bottom-line figures, however, are ugly reading compared to the revenue. In the aforementioned interview, the interim CEO stated that lately, customers have been ready for “larger cases” on the AI front. Personally, I would think that customers’ “need for external support” and overall management of systems—and the added value AI brings to them—is not going anywhere; quite the opposite. If there is excess headcount as operations become more efficient, then unfortunately that must be reacted to, and shouldn’t that be directly reflected in profitability and earnings? Is that the reason for the CEO’s departure—that the necessary moves regarding headcount weren’t made and pushed through? Do they dare to do it now, when there’s only talk about sharpening sales? There is something in this equation I don’t understand, or perhaps I understand it better than the market, but then again, I’m not an insider in the scene, just a bystander. A year ago, the share price started sliding from over 6 euros. Are we now selling 5-euro notes at less than half price, provided the profitability challenge starts moving in the right direction? Attached is a screenshot of the customer list from Savusalo’s presentation; surely the business and the need for future services for all of these aren’t disappearing simultaneously. According to Savusalo, there is even pent-up need and demand for services… What about the possibility of M&A? Will Reaktor or someone else buy out these good, established customer relationships at a bargain price? Antti Mäkelä (Reaktor founder) bought an additional 107,296 Siili shares in April…

In practice, AI increases employee productivity, which means more sales are needed to keep the same headcount busy. Otherwise, the cycle of change negotiations will continue. Since improving profitability should be Siili’s top priority, it’s understandable that they are emphasizing sharpening their sales, as layoffs (YT-neuvottelut) are likely not the preferred option after just recently competing for labor.

It is almost without exception the same sort of beating around the bush across the industry; the sense of direction is currently somewhat lost, and IT consulting is forced to reinvent itself in a struggle for survival.

I just watched the interim CEO’s presentation at the IT Services evening. The content was quite light (strengthening sales, sharpening focus, and identifying AI market trends). I didn’t really find any substance that would make the company stand out in an extremely competitive market.

What I mainly remember about the CEO is a limp handshake. I don’t know if he was just having a bad day, but the value add for Siili was clearly insufficient. Someone here compared Siili and Vincit with each other, and it might not be a coincidence that they also share some history regarding past CEOs.
