QT Group operates in the IT sector. The group develops various development tools for the global market. The technology is based on QT technology and is used to develop multi-platform interfaces and associated applications. The services are used in, among other things, industrial robots, entertainment systems, and vehicle systems. Operations are conducted on a global level and customers are found in the automotive and aerospace industries.

How do you approach analyzing the company yourself, or are you a user of the product? I mean, I think this is the kind of company where it is almost impossible to get any concrete and impartial analysis, at least with my own research methods. The company’s product is so niche that it isn’t even discussed on its own discussion forum. If I recall correctly, Qt had even been dropped from the latest Stack Overflow developer survey. The Inderes analyst also seemed to run into this same problem back in the day when they justified Qt’s competitiveness by pointing out that competitors hadn’t released any new references. So, I’m open to tips on how a basic stock picker can analyze this company (other than blindly trusting Varelius’s forecasts). Almanakka’s analysis, primarily for evaluating the IAR acquisition, was a perfectly valid way to approach the company from one angle, and especially for validating management’s say-do ratio.

Perhaps the Ingmans are playing the long game here? The goals set by the Chairman of the Board are in line with the growth strategy. I would understand this criticism if there were no growth prospects or if the ownership were very faceless.

Good post. Unfortunately, there are few positive drivers for Qt at the moment. There is potential, but there are also risks, and I have not seen a credible strategy execution roadmap from the company and the CEO. It mostly feels like they are downplaying the concerns of the capital markets.

That was genuinely a good write-up. At the very least, I think I got out due to the problems mentioned in the post: the expensive IAR acquisition, the mystery surrounding the return on that acquisition, and the management’s excessive compensation. I have jumped back in at the €19–22 level. It is still hard to assess whether the management knows how to do the right things and how this will actually compete against, say, Flutter. The management and their latest moves haven’t inspired any level of confidence, but on some level, even this is starting to look cheap. So, it’s really difficult to assess the company’s future as a whole, but that post presented some very good arguments as to why one should at least be on their toes with this one.

“… I am not an expert on the company…  … I am not a coder… I have never used Qt’s products, and I don’t know anyone who has… I have been looking into things I consider important with the help of AI…” I don’t know why I read that text after this introduction.

Almanakka has now been writing about Qt as well   First, the incentives. As long as the long-term remuneration is determined by the level of revenue, every euro accumulating in the till is a candidate for the next IAR (Investment-Accounted-Research/Capitalized R&D). The metric should be return on capital, and it should be accompanied by proper profit distribution so that money doesn’t always have to be burned on the next overpriced failure.
