First patient treated at Leeds Cancer Centre using RayStation’s new reirradiation functionality

RAY BPress release06.11.2026, 09.00

RaySearch Laboratories AB (publ) is pleased to announce that Leeds Cancer Centre, part of Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, has successfully treated its first patient using the reirradiation functionality introduced in RayStation® v2026.* The patient is the first in the world to receive a radiotherapy treatment planned using these new clinical reirradiation tools, developed through a long-standing research collaboration between RaySearch and Leeds scientists and clinicians.

As advances in cancer care continue to improve treatment outcomes, more patients are receiving multiple courses of radiation therapy during their lifetime. When radiation is delivered again to a previously irradiated area, known as reirradiation, clinicians must carefully balance the clinical goals of the new treatment against the risk of adverse effects associated with the cumulative dose of all prior treatment courses. This assessment is complex given the effects of multiple radiation treatments depend on several factors, including the time between treatments, tissue recovery, and the spatial distribution of doses from prior treatment courses.

Over the past decade, researchers and clinicians from Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and the University of Leeds have worked closely with RaySearch to develop tools that support radiobiology considerations during planning and evaluation of reirradiation treatments. This collaboration has helped shape a comprehensive suite of functionalities that are now available in RayStation v2026.

RayStation’s advanced treatment planning tools help address the specific challenges of reirradiation cases by enabling cumulative dose assessment based on deformable image registration and accounting for differences in fractionation and, where clinically appropriate, incorporating tissue-specific recovery estimates. The functionality allows clinical teams to evaluate radiation dose from the current reirradiation plan together with prior treatment dose and thereby supports treatment optimization with detailed consideration of previously irradiated tissues.

The treatment of the first patient using the reirradiation functionality, successfully completed on 26 October 2026, marks an important milestone in the translation of research into clinical practice and demonstrates how advanced treatment planning technologies can support the growing need for reirradiation worldwide.

“Accounting for the previous radiotherapy when planning a new course is extremely challenging. Alongside our colleagues from the University of Leeds, we have been working for over ten years on the research that has underpinned the development of these new tools, and I am delighted that they are now available to teams in other hospitals. The tools will also give future radiotherapy trials better information about how changing the way that reirradiation is delivered influences the patients’ outcomes,” said John Lilley, Head of External Beam Radiotherapy Physics at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

“One of RaySearch’s key strengths is the way we bring together scientific innovation and close collaboration with clinicians to develop advanced software that addresses real clinical needs. This milestone in reirradiation reflects our broader commitment to advancing cancer care and addressing complex treatment needs worldwide”, adds Johan Löf, founder and CEO of RaySearch Laboratories.

The research underpinning the development of these new software tools was supported by Cancer Research UK RadNet Leeds, Yorkshire Cancer Research, and the Medical Research Council.
