BPC Instruments operates in biotechnology. The company sells and develops automated analytical tools used in biotechnical analysis. The product line is centered around systems that measure gas volume, gas flow rate and emissions. In addition, the company operates in sectors such as biodegradability, animal and human nutrition and wastewater treatment. BPC Instruments was founded in 2005 and is headquartered in Lund.

The result itself is out. Indeed, headwinds from customer hesitation, the krona weakened, some orders shifted out beyond the first quarter, etc. Those things fluctuate. At the same time, the quarter should be viewed in the context of timing effects, prolonged sales cycles, currency headwinds and continued investments in the platform and organisation, not as a weakening of BPC’s long-term market relevance.  With small illiquid companies, sentiment on the stock exchange shifts quickly. The company has 69 MSEK in cash, which is more than a year’s worth of revenue!  In the last quarter, all sales went to either the biogas or biodegradability segments.  The stock has taken a tumble. EV/S is now 2x, EV/EBIT 18x. If one were to assume that a niche instrument company’s profitability would normally be 20%, the EV/EBIT would be 10x. Of course, the company aims to grow (already over 30 employees!), and therefore top-line growth must materialize to achieve such profitability.

BPC unexpectedly released preliminary figures just before the stock market closed for May Day in Sweden.  Revenue decreased, and the result was exceptionally loss-making due to growth investments.  BPC Instruments continues to see clear interest in its products and solutions, but the increased macroeconomic uncertainty on several markets has resulted in longer sales cycles and extended lead times in customers’ investment and financing decisions, making it more difficult to close sales within previously expected timeframes. Currency effects also had a negative impact on the operating result during the quarter.   During the first quarter of 2026, BPC Instruments’ preliminary net sales amounted to approximately SEK 12.49 million (13.05), and EBIT amounted to approximately SEK -0.58 million (0.95). This is indeed an interesting stock, and geopolitical uncertainty speaks volumes in favor of seeking alternatives to fossil fuels. For this company in particular, looking only in the rearview mirror could lead to missing the entire investment case quite badly. These types of cases easily get lost on the forum without tags, and their importance grows as more and more threads are created. Something should be done about this tagging issue and the grouping of threads.

A light comment to a quiet thread. Yesterday the stock reached as high as 26.90 SEK, because someone just had to have it. Trading volume was just over 3000 shares.  So, less than 7000 euros. This is typical for these small companies. The order books are thin. If someone wants in or out, the doorframe collapses.  Like Frank Drebin in this scene.

Tensions in the Middle East have raised energy prices again, and if the situation persists, one could expect it to have a positive impact on bioenergy production. So far, at least, it hasn’t been reflected in this company’s share prices. A few months ago, I asked CEO Liu for his opinion on the market situation, and he sent this excerpt from LinkedIn as a response:  Biogas and biomethane are no longer about “potential” — but they are not yet about scale. Financial statement release is out. Phew, first the most important: no dividend. Otherwise, somewhat lackluster growth in Q4, as with the whole year.
