Tesla Inc (Tesla) is an automotive and energy company. It designs, develops, manufactures, sells, and leases electric vehicles and energy generation and storage systems. The company produces and sells the Model Y, Model 3, Model X, Model S, Cybertruck, Tesla Semi, and Tesla Roadster vehicles.

My view has always been that profitable and growing car sales are needed to fund the development of autonomy and robotics in the future. Car sales are also among Musk’s goals; we are less than halfway there, and especially the target for FSD subscription volumes (10m) requires significant car sales well into the next decade. I can’t identify any specific driver from the February growth figures. Most likely, the Model Y line change last year, the new Standard/Y L models, the interest rate campaign in China, and growth in the ROW (Rest of World) market are behind it, but the relative impact of these is unclear. BYD’s sales might lag now that Chinese subsidies have ended, and they don’t export as much as Tesla.

Even if that seems to be the case, there is probably no reason for either side to steer the conversation away from the topic. Of course, if the current valuation is justified by car sales, as it was just a few years ago, then the point would be very relevant.  Undoubtedly surprisingly large positive growth figures. I wonder what is behind BYD’s slump in its home market and Tesla’s massive production growth in China? It is unlikely that the oil crisis card has had any effect on the February figures yet.

Usually, these things are reported based on what is happening in the market, even though some people want to believe in a grand conspiracy. A moment ago it was already stated that car sales don’t matter because of robotaxi and Optimus. From the link Kasleew shared earlier, you can clearly see that the number of unsupervised cars has not increased at all over the last couple of weeks. Well, now even Reuters is writing that Tesla’s February production in China is +91% (mentioning the “low comparison,” of course). BYD is doing a bit worse, with sales at -65%. Model Ys were also exported to Norway from China this quarter. When the global picture further includes tanker fires in the Strait of Hormuz and oil “demand destruction” kicks in through fuel prices, car sales could surprise to the upside. Well, Toyota’s growth was quite strong in percentage terms too, around +4.6% yoy.

If you compare these figures on an annual basis, the effects of zero interest rates and such are factored out.  It wasn’t a very growth-driven year for either Tesla or Toyota last year.  However, Toyota Group sold 11 million cars globally, while Tesla sold 1.7–1.8 million cars.

February was strong. And you’re also right that in Finland, the Tesla buyer is a 95% broke engineer in the 30-45 age group who gets the car with heavy financing. (Fact) I’m eagerly looking forward to March.. heard the backlog is growing for the first time in a while and delivery times are long.. of course, with that valuation, they really need to sell a lot of cars.. (of course, those were at zero interest, so margins suffered)
