However, the absolute level of profitability is still weak, and the earnings improvement driven by the efficiency program we forecast will be used to digest the valuation multiples, which is why we see the return expectation as weak. We reiterate our “Reduce” recommendation but raise the target price to €0.63 (previously €0.60) due to upward revisions to our forecasts. Boom! Suominen beat forecasts for the first time in about five years. The level is admittedly still weak, but at least the adj. operating profit rose above zero. The guidance for increasing adj. EBITDA for the full year remains unchanged, and this result gives confidence in its realization (our forecast was quite close before Q2). After a quick look into the industry and its companies, it feels like there are quite a lot of challenges in general, and there don’t seem to be any clear, major growth drivers visible for the sector as a whole. The questions below might be silly and unnecessary, so there’s no need to ask them, but they just came to mind.  1. How is the long-term demand/growth of the market developing, and what are Suominen’s strengths relative to its competitors? 2. Does Suominen currently have any new product, material, or technological development projects, etc., underway that could bring new growth or, for example, otherwise open up various new opportunities in the near future?

Here are Rauli’s preview comments ahead of Suominen’s Q2 report release on Friday, August 7th.   We expect revenue to have turned to clear growth due to the recovery in volumes. However, we estimate that the earnings level will remain at the level of the comparison period, burdened by rising raw material and energy costs. The company recently completed its oversubscribed share issue, which will ease the balance sheet situation, but the progress of the operational turnaround remains under our magnifying glass. We expect the company to reiterate its full-year guidance, although we see a clear downward risk in it.
