Wärtsilä specializes in power solutions for the marine and energy sectors. The business is managed based on several business segments and the range includes integrated system solutions, spare parts, and associated service functions during the installation cycle, but also complete operation and optimization services. The company was originally founded in 1834 and is headquartered in Helsinki, Finland.

No acute slump in the data center segment is currently in sight, but I consider it likely to occur in the medium term. Building data centers based on their own energy production is a new phenomenon that began in 2024, linked to massive investments by AI hyperscalers as they have been forced to secure a large amount of data center capacity quickly. However, there are several reasons why this demand driver might weaken in the coming years relative to current strong activity:   Demand weakens. Investors realize that not all AI companies are good investment targets. OpenAI runs into trouble and Alphabet succeeds. The focus shifts away from the performance of individual models (the development of which requires data center capacity) and instead, investors are interested in how AI is utilized in business (e.g., Google has massive amounts of data and established customer interfaces). The AI business becomes less capital-intensive and built data center capacity is reallocated from industry losers to winners, causing the need for new construction to cool down, at least momentarily.   Energy supply increases. The average price of electricity in the USA has risen from 7 cents per kWh in 2017 to as much as 19 cents per kWh. Growing demand fuels supply, even though the growth in supply only manifests with a delay. In addition to the growth of renewable energy and grid connections, gas turbine manufacturers are also increasing production capacity. Furthermore, data center users are learning to use capacity smarter and more energy-efficiently, so that facilities could, for example, take advantage of cheaper electricity prices offered by renewable energy, e.g., in model training.   Historically, these types of investment-driven booms have usually cooled down at some point—not disappeared completely, of course, but nonetheless caused significant fluctuations in stock prices. Examples include Kempower and Neste from recent years.

The technologies offered by the unit, ranging from ballast water treatment to efficient wastewater systems, support vessels’ operational efficiency, compliance, and environmental performance throughout the vessel’s entire lifecycle. As part of Wärtsilä Portfolio Business, Water & Waste has operated independently. The objective has been to support Wärtsilä’s financial results and unlock value for the company by selling the business unit. In 2025, the Water & Waste unit’s net sales were EUR 54 million. The completion of the sale of the Water & Waste unit is expected to take place during the third quarter of 2026, subject to necessary approvals. Following this, Wärtsilä will have sold all units belonging to its Portfolio Business.

Here is a company report on Wärtsilä from Pauli after Q4.  Wärtsilä’s Q4 report confirmed the narrative of improving profitability, but Energy’s order intake fell short of high expectations. The company’s coming years will be characterized by strong earnings growth, as the order book provides visibility for deliveries and the company announced it is increasing production capacity in Vaasa with a relatively capital-light investment. Large data center-related orders will play a significant role in earnings growth over the coming years, but we see the sustainability of this demand driver as questionable. Valuation is stretched and requires strong data center demand to continue beyond a few-year period. We downgrade our recommendation to sell (prev. reduce) and reiterate the target price of EUR 30 for the share. Wärtsilä Corporation, Trade press release 5 February 2026 at 12:00 UTC+2 Technology group Wärtsilä                             Technology group Wärtsilä has extended its operation and maintenance agreement with Musandam Power Company of Oman, an independent power producer (IPP), for another seven years. This extension builds on eight years of operation and maintenance support from Wärtsilä, during which the Musandam independent power plant has consistently delivered outstanding reliability and availability. The agreement extension order was booked by Wärtsilä in Q2 2025. The plant operates with 15 Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel engines delivering a net power output of 120 MW. It is the main source of energy for the grid and provides electricity to the Musandam region of Oman.

Hmm… could the analyst explain, though, why this data center business would slump? Or was this an assessment made for a specific timeframe (6-12 months)? I recall that Wärtsilä might not have an offering for every size category. It might be that I’m looking at this too much through “energy lenses” due to my work, but the data center boom is quite intense right now and isn’t going to fade anytime soon, unless the world shifts into a completely new position.
