Nokia Research: 75% of European business leaders feel that current network infrastructure limits their AI ambitions. Nearly half (45%) believe these constraints delay or entirely prevent AI investments. Geographical Divide: Europe is significantly lagging behind the United States and Asia in network coverage and investment levels. AI requires “5G Standalone” (5G SA) networks to function effectively, of which there are currently few in Europe.  2. China and the USA as Pioneers  China: Ericsson CEO Börje Ekholm highlights China as an example of “lighthouse factories,” where 5G integration has already enabled extensive robotics and a drone economy. United States: The USA leads in market-driven innovation, particularly in AI integration and Open Radio Access Networks (Open RAN).  3. Demand for Banning Chinese “High-Risk” Vendors Nokia is demanding that the EU tighten its grip and make the so-called 5G Toolbox recommendations binding.  Security First: Nokia wants to extend the ban to include fiber and optical networks, citing the threat of industrial espionage. Current Status: Although the EU is pressuring member states to remove Huawei and ZTE from their networks, only 13 out of 27 countries have taken action. In Germany, for example, Deutsche Telekom’s networks still rely heavily on Huawei.  4. Turning Point in Regulation and Funding (January 2026)  Cybersecurity Act: The European Commission (led by Vice President Henna Virkkunen) is set to introduce a reform in late January that could block the use of EU funding for equipment from high-risk vendors. Digital Networks Act: The new legislation aims to harmonize spectrum policy and facilitate operator mergers to ensure that players in Europe are large enough to invest in new technology.

It’s hard to completely disagree with this. However, a positive perspective offers a bright future. If bringing AI computing to the network edge becomes a reality and use cases are found for it, there is massive upside for Nokia’s share price.

Ericsson’s layoff announcement signals that 5G is a lost mobile generation. Despite years of promises regarding new business opportunities and groundbreaking use cases, the telecommunications industry continues to stagnate. As Ericsson announces further layoffs, 5G increasingly looks like a mobile generation that fell short of its potential.
