I support company-paid analysis. Company-paid analysis makes the existence of the coverage itself possible. As for Premium, I pay for the tool and the way to use information, not for the creation of the analysis. Would you like me to clarify anything further regarding this?  Sure, it said that, but I interpret it such that the company was not ready to pay for the client relationship. For this reason, “TIETO’s decision” is also in quotation marks. If there is no willingness to pay for coverage, visibility or valuation levels are not key objectives right now. Personally, I don’t see this as a good signal. Of course, the counter-argument to this is that the company is focusing on operational performance. Still, the end result is the same. My own visibility is weakened. In our view, the analysis market is gradually shifting towards a model of company-paid analysis that is open to all investors. Due to this and our internationalization strategy, we are focusing our coverage resources on our client companies.

Yep. Back when I was working at Tieto, as soon as Alkio arrived, everything started going downhill. I don’t know if it has anything to do with the fact that Kimmo Alkio might not have been that great of a tennis player either.

At Tieto, things finally seem to be heading in a better direction after a long time. Replacing Alkio with a Norwegian was clearly a good move. Earnings are improving, and now there’s a big share buyback as well. Maybe this stock will properly take off one day. Though there might be a setback in the ESG targets

Umm.. So which model do you support? Company-paid analysis or investor-paid?  There seems to be a misunderstanding here as well. As I understand it, Tieto was not a corporate client of Inderes. In the bulletin linked above, it is stated explicitly:  Coverage ends by Inderes’ decision.

Great post! In my opinion, paid analysis is not a problem. On the contrary, I see it as a normal way to ensure the market receives enough information, especially regarding smaller companies that the market would not otherwise follow at all. I also think this is the only way to get analysts committed to companies, and I am happy to pay for this service. I trust that this way, analysts—at least in a professional capacity—are more interested in the company than those who follow it from the sidelines. For me, the greatest value doesn’t come from target prices, but from comprehensive reports and good interviews. A shame! In my view, ”TIETO’s decision” to end analysis coverage signals the company’s attitude toward investor communications. In this regard, I will stay on the sidelines and watch the situation.

Inderes as a company, of course, strives for the best possible profitability. On the other hand, a model where company coverage is based on a fee received from the company being followed is not entirely without its problems. This brings to mind discussions about the independence of auditors and, for example, the Enron case. Regarding an operator like Inderes, a problem could arise from, for instance, forecasts based on unfounded growth expectations. For example, company management speaks motivated by an option program, and the analyst simply cannot dismiss the talk as rubbish for the sake of their own earnings. As a side note, I haven’t investigated how many of the companies in the model portfolio are paying customers, but it might be good to bring this up, especially going forward. For example, during the dot-com bubble, a few brokerage firms in Finland a. were driven by this very dynamic to consciously deceive their customers or b. simply ended up caught in the hype. I am not claiming or even believing that Inderes operates this way, but the danger is very real.
