Terveystalo operates in the healthcare sector. The company offers services and solutions such as surveys and examinations, training and coaching, rehabilitation, and health and fitness mapping. Its customers include small and medium-sized corporate customers, as well as public sector players. The head office is located in Helsinki.

This is no surprise to those in the industry, completely expected. If the total reimbursement for a Kela65 visit is 100e and Terveystalo takes as much as 60e, then what professional wants to do such an appointment when the compensation is 40e and the time allocated by Terveystalo/Mehiläinen/Pihlajalinna is 20 minutes, which is too short. Kela65 is a good experiment that works really well at small and agile clinics. You get 100e, of which only a marginal amount goes to expenses. With a 30-minute appointment, when you take 2 of these per hour, it’s a decent compensation. For large corporations, the concept has been made miserable in every way: for both the customer and the professional. Addendum:  Roni, you commented: “According to our assessment, challenges to increasing visit numbers include increasing supply and, in particular, the awareness of the experiment among those over 65 years of age.” The biggest problem is simply that few doctors want to do the work Terveystalo offers under such miserable conditions. There’s nothing more to it than that.

The challenge of increasing the supply is precisely that the freedom of choice experiment is not at all attractive to the practitioner. The freedom of choice experiment itself is already starting to be known to those who want to use it.

Here are Roni’s comments on how the volumes of the freedom of choice experiment for those aged 65 and over have remained small.  Terveystalo’s first three months’ Kela65 freedom of choice experiment volumes have remained at a moderate level, and visits have not yet started to grow from the first month’s levels. With current volumes, the direct effects of the experiment on Terveystalo’s figures are still small, in our estimation. Pihlajalinna, which is under our coverage, is also participating in the freedom of choice experiment. The company does not report the experiment’s visit numbers, but we estimate that the overall direction of development has been similar to Terveystalo’s. Relatively yes, but absolutely the fee remains the same for 10-20 min appointments. Indeed, this increases Terveystalo’s earnings, assuming that practitioners do not switch to competitors. If more 20-min appointments are sold during the day, then an office fee also goes into Terveystalo’s till for each additional visit. Similarly, if 20 minutes is not enough to handle the patient’s matters, billing can be done according to the time used (i.e., for example, it’s legitimate to charge a 30-min price for a 25-min visit including documentation), so now that is taken away from the practitioner.
