Sveafastigheter wins land allocation competition for Silokvarteren – new neighborhood connects Västerås with Lake Mälaren

Sveafastigheter

Sveafastigheter and White Arkitekter are one of three winning teams in the land allocation competition for Silokvarteren in Västerås. The project will transform a former industrial area into a vibrant and mixed neighborhood with housing, workplaces, culture, parks and public spaces – in one of the city’s most central and waterfront locations.

Silokvarteren will be an important part of the development of Mälarporten and will connect the city center, the new travel center and the Mälaren waterfront area. By taking advantage of the site’s industrial heritage and combining it with new buildings, a new neighborhood is created that is both compact, green and vibrant.

- We are proud of the trust that, in close collaboration with the city of Västerås, JM and Arvet & Arwidsro, we will develop Silokvarteren into the city’s future landmark, a unique place in the best location in Västerås, says Erik Hävermark, CEO of Sveafastigheter.

The Silokvarteren neighborhood is planned as a so-called 15-minute city, where housing, services, workplaces, schools, culture and recreation are within walking and cycling distance. Public spaces, parks and quaysides make Lake Mälaren more accessible and create new meeting places that strengthen city life all year round.

– The interest in the competition has been very high, and the quality of the proposals was impressive. This gives us good setting to create something that will really benefit Västerås. Now we are taking an important next step to open up an area that has been inaccessible for a long time and make it a place that more Västerås residents can be part of, says Staffan Jansson (S), chairman of the municipal board.

- Urban development must begin with what is already there. The transformation of the silos will become a defining element of the Silo Districts, adding new chapters to the story of Västerås as a forward-looking hub for technology and innovation. Unlocking the value of the existing built environment also creates the foundation for new investments and future-oriented living environments, says Martin Sundberg, Architect and Office Director at White Arkitekter Malmö.

The project will be developed in stages over time in close collaboration with the city of Västerås and local stakeholders. The detailed planning work will begin in the spring of 2026.
