Optomed operates in the medical technology sector. The company conducts research and development of specialized eye cameras. Development takes place of both hardware and software that are resold under different brands. Operations are held on a global level, with the largest presence in the Nordic market. Customers consist of research institutes and hospitals. The company has its headquarters in Oulu.

Yesterday’s immediate bounce was +20%, but once the most eager investors had taken their profits, algorithmic trading continued with individual trades of 5-30 shares at a declining price, and the stock retraced on low volume to close the day up +17%. In my opinion, Optomed’s stock has reached a state where only a clear, profitable result and dividends can guarantee its valuation. Or at the very least, cash flow must be neutral so that the doomsday prophets move on to their next victim. In practice, the recently announced deal frees up inventory that had accumulated sufficiently according to the Q1 balance sheet. In other words, the deal confirms: the wheels are still turning and it’s business as usual. I don’t know what the funds’ end game is with this stock. When the outlook for the current year was given, the weeping and gnashing of teeth crashed the stock from the €4.00 level to €2.80, from where it coasted down to €2.50 earlier this year. Q1 was soft, and the most frantic investors started expecting bankruptcy or at least a share issue (anti), causing a retreat to the €1.50 levels. Now some kind of confirmation has arrived; the guidance seems to hold. AEYE is stronger than ever (unlikely that sales have stopped) and China is progressing. I would argue there is upside potential for a full euro, but if the market wants concrete returns in the form of dividends (this is the Helsinki Stock Exchange, after all), we’ll have to wait a couple more years for that.

A small “study” on yesterday’s +18.30% day. I compared Optomed’s entire stock market history to those days where the single-day close-to-close return was better than this. Basis of the study: 6 days in the entire history (2019–2024) where +18% was exceeded in a single day. Time windows T+5 and T+30 days. Results:   T+5 day close return: avg. +2.4%, median 0%, positive 3/6. In other words, a week later the price is on average at the same level or slightly higher, but the variance is high (best intraday +18%, worst −5%).   T+30 day close return: avg. +23.7%, median +24.2%, positive 5/6 (83%). A month later, the historical expected return is clearly positive, and only one case ended in the red (−1.25%).   The two best matches were 2021-04-09 (+52% T+30) and 2022-11-03 (+39% T+30). In both, volume was high and backed by a fundamental catalyst, not just a sentiment reaction.   The closest comparison to yesterday is 2021-04-12 (+18.81%, nearly identical return), where T+5 was flat (−0.8%) but T+30 was +34.3%. A classic consolidation + continuous rise pattern. Added spice: This time we started practically from ATL (All-Time Low) figures (June 16 intraday low €1.37), not from hype levels like in 2021. Pricing is low, demand is starting to return, and the magnitude of yesterday’s order was historical. This is a favorable base where the corrective movement can be faster than normal: when the rise starts from a low price level, the same percentages take the stock price to clearly more moderate valuation multiples. Historical evidence guarantees nothing, but it is an interesting perspective nonetheless. In 5/6 cases, the price was higher a month later, by an average of +24%. From yesterday’s close of €1.67, this would correspond to a level of about €2.07, which doesn’t seem particularly high either. Understood. It could mean either of the things you mentioned, or they might acquire the hardware first and then the AI shortly after.

Could someone explain to a layman what it means / could mean when they are just selling the hardware (rauta) to the distributor? In other words, is there no interest in AI, or is it perfectly natural that the end-users acquire it separately—and it’s not the distributor’s business? I’m not sure if anyone understands what I mean, but have a great Midsummer everyone!

Or maybe it’s just Optomed’s way of informing cautiously/understating things. In any case, it was great news, and now let’s hope for more to follow since the pipe is open.

If this ~€1.8M order level finally exceeds the disclosure threshold, and today’s information is that the company is maintaining its guidance, it raises a suspicion for me that this current Q2 hasn’t been a walk in the park.. Hopefully, however, a fund-raising round can be avoided and the share price recovers to the levels seen in Q1. A happy and sunny Midsummer to my fellow sufferers
