Neste produces transport fuel and renewable fuels. Today, the largest operations and extraction are held in the Nordic market, where the company is active in the entire value chain, from extraction to delivery to port depots. Having looked at the chart lately, I’ll answer this as a professional bagholder. Peace in Iran = Neste drops. Bombs in Iran = Neste drops. Rain in the Balearics = Neste drops.

I wonder how much the Iran situation will eventually affect Neste’s price; will the red days continue badly, or is a declaration of peace such a major factor for Neste?

Three Mile Island is a far cry from the ambitious Finnish climate targets mentioned in Anttonen’s interview, although nuclear power and climate goals do align very well. The bridge to the U.S. is also illogical because they currently lack ambitious climate targets over there. In that sense, it is relevant to the topic as the electricity for Finnish data centers is indeed produced by nuclear power in addition to renewables. Those are essentially the only forms of electricity production for data centers in Finland. The share of others is negligible.

Microsoft is trying to get Three Mile Island Unit 1 back up and running. Wärtsilä is selling gas and multi-fuel engines for data center startup in so-called off-grid use, as new data centers requiring hundreds of megawatts cannot be connected to the power grid for years due to capacity shortages, and gas turbine manufacturers have full order books for years to come. Of course, some portion of data center electricity can come from solar and wind power. However, the electricity demand of these facilities is practically continuous and, in an ideal situation, also very stable and constantly near the data center’s nominal capacity in megawatts. Solar and wind power do not meet this need, and there isn’t a sufficient quantity of batteries to compensate for fluctuations in production. It is therefore no wonder that current data centers being built for AI needs are powered by nuclear energy, gas turbines, and natural gas engines.

Why wouldn’t they fit together? What other industry would be a better fit? I’m not entirely convinced by this data center boom myself, but nothing accelerates the green transition as fast as data centers. Data centers enter into very long-term agreements with wind and solar power producers, creating strong demand for renewable energy. Data centers will utilize their waste heat and are inevitably forced to develop energy-efficient technology. There are indeed problems and questions associated with data centers, but they are certainly not an obstacle to ambitious climate policy—on the contrary. Data centers currently act as the most significant financiers of renewable energy.
