Kesko operates in the retail sector. The company offers services primarily aimed at the food, construction and technology industries. The largest activities are found in the development of store concepts, channel sales, e-commerce sites and business models. The majority of operations are found in the Nordic and Baltic markets. The head office is located in Helsinki.

Has the selection become poor in April-May? Has the usability of the online store declined? Also, for which fitness equipment do good weather conditions create a particular season? I don’t fully understand the answer. If you have recently checked the pricing, how does that make this season exceptionally weak? If a delayed season is being pushed with discounted prices, shouldn’t that still stimulate sales? Personally, I don’t view wilderness/outdoor life as a warm-weather season, but more as a holiday activity that doesn’t start as early as May. In my opinion, the start of the season is specifically for cycling, rollerblading, skateboarding, running/walking, outdoor gyms, and football. Personally, I certainly want to test-drive and buy a new bike assembled and adjusted for me. I don’t want that bike in a cardboard box delivered to my yard to be assembled, spending the good weather at the start of the season putting a puzzle together. I also want to actually try on shoes used for running, rollerblading, or football. I haven’t yet encountered a brand’s online store where fitting and testing is possible. Sure, they can be sent home, but sending back 5–10 pairs of shoes is its own hassle. I’d rather march into a store and try different options. K-Group’s stores haven’t negatively stood out in that regard. The selection has clearly narrowed since online stores arrived. But compared to other sporting goods stores, it’s not weak. In shoes, the JD.com store and Sports Direct are in a class of their own regarding selection. But discontinued models shine there in terms of those prices. I consider K-Group’s bike selection to be quite good. If you’re looking for a low price, you go to Citymarket to get that cardboard box. At Budget Sport, you get slightly better service and a bit more selection. The brands are largely “budget” ones. Then, if you want a higher-level bike, you go to Intersport, and you start finding Nishiki and domestic brands. (Madison, sold by Citymarket, is to my understanding a domestic brand that I think is surprisingly high quality in terms of price-quality ratio. The components are very much the same as Jupiter/Tunturi/Helkama. You might just have to assemble it yourself.) You won’t find any large selections of specialized bikes in K-Group stores (Fatbikes, extremely light racing bikes, etc.). In my opinion, the selection of sportswear in K-Group’s sports stores is surprisingly wide. That is certainly the most competitive sector. If I had to think of a reason myself, I suspect consumer caution—people don’t want to buy expensive things. They then buy something cheap from Temu/similar or from Hypermarkets/Tokmanni.

The selection at Intersport, not to mention Budget Sport, is poor; the usability of the online store and the availability of popular products at the right price point are weak, and in the big picture, the cost structure is too heavy in relation to efficiency. Kesko’s sports trade lags behind brands’ own online stores, specialized outdoor retailers, and shops focused on the sale and development of fitness equipment. Furthermore, Intersport is deeply rooted in Kesko’s pricing strategy, where the so-called “Reg. price” of all products is 25% higher than competitors’ normal prices. After that, they repeatedly blast late seasonal sales and all sorts of clearance drives where prices are -50% but still higher than the competitors. Consumers—an ever-growing mass of them—are simply no longer so foolish as to fall for this image manipulation. There are a few reasons.

Does anyone have thoughts on why Kesko’s sports trade sales were so sluggish in May? The weather was actually better for outdoor activities/sports compared to the reference period.

Here is the release regarding Kesko’s performance in May.   “Kesko’s sales growth continued in May, with sales increasing by 2.9%. In the grocery trade, there was one fewer delivery day than the previous year, and sales grew by 0.2%. In the building and technical trade, sales grew by 9.8%. In the building and technical trade, there was one fewer delivery day in Finland and Sweden than the previous year, and two fewer in Denmark and Norway. In the car trade, sales grew in used cars, but sales in new cars and services declined,” says Kesko’s President and CEO Jorma Rauhala. Grocery trade sales in May were €547.0 million, an increase of 0.2%. Grocery sales to K-food stores grew by 0.5%. Sales in K-Citymarket’s home and specialty goods grew. Kespro’s sales decreased by 3.1%. Building and technical trade sales in May were €479.5 million, an increase of 9.8%. In comparable terms, sales grew by 4.7%. Hardware store sales grew by 10.0%, and in comparable terms, they grew by 1.7%. In Denmark, the sales of Roslev Trælasthandel A/S, acquired on 1 February 2025, and CF Petersen & Søn A/S, acquired on 1 May 2025, are included in the division’s figures for both May 2026 and 2025. In Denmark, Tømmergaarden A/S has been part of Kesko since 1 June 2025. Technical trade sales grew by 9.1% in comparable terms. Sales for the entire division grew in comparable terms by 5.8% in Finland, 12.3% in Sweden, and 1.4% in Denmark, while declining by 1.0% in Norway. Car trade division sales in May were €110.6 million, a decrease of 9.3%. In the car trade, sales decreased by 9.5%. Sales decreased in new cars and services and grew in used cars. Sports trade sales decreased by 7.3%. Kesko Group’s total sales in May 2026 were €1,134.7 million, an increase of 2.9%.
