Fortum is active in the energy sector. The only thing one can really say about these tax planning cases is: don’t hate the player, hate the game. Everyone else is doing the exact same thing.

What else could the executive say? But Fortum has been doing that for over 20 years. Every now and then, it makes the news, there’s a brief moment of outrage, and then things carry on as usual because everyone actually knows that Fortum needs to be allowed to play by the same rules as other companies. A few years pass, and the same outrage repeats. As a Fortum shareholder, I expect Fortum to use every tax optimization method it possibly can and is legally allowed to do. The rest is just whining that flares up occasionally and then dies down. The state screws over Fortum enough as it is, so thank God it doesn’t interfere with Fortum’s tax planning.

I don’t understand what the problem is there? Surely there is nothing illegal about it? Isn’t the company just trying to optimize its “tax planning” here? The money that remains with the company in this case doesn’t seem to “disappear” anywhere abroad. On the contrary, it stays in the firm’s coffers to create shareholder value, also for the state. In my opinion, it’s at least better that the money, including the state’s share, is rather on the balance sheet, where for example Solidium / ownership steering can influence its use more directly, than if it went through taxes to be redistributed to the likes of Sofia and Minja, or someone else equally clever. I want to believe, at least, that those mentioned above have a bit more tactical sense regarding asset management.
