ARR is not a piece of information required by law in the official financial statements of a listed company. In that sense, its presentation is not explicitly regulated. However, it is a so-called alternative performance measure (APM), which is also strictly regulated under IFRS standards. What is problematic in Qt’s case is whether the license revenues they present in the ARR figure belong in ARR at all? In my opinion, they do not, because they recognize license fees upfront, meaning that accounting-wise, it is a fixed-term license with no ongoing performance obligation. Many listed companies exclude upfront recognized license fees entirely from ARR and only include services recognized over time. In other words, ARR should be a forward-looking forecast of the current subscription base. Therefore, including a potential new contract to be signed, for example, three years after an already recognized license in the ARR is too optimistic and a misleading practice. In my view, it does not help that the company has briefly described the calculation method of the indicator in the notes. I also believe the company’s auditors have let the company off too easily in this regard. I would like to further state that, in itself, it is good that the company provides additional information on the development of license sales according to the current contract base. However, presenting that information as an ARR figure is misleading, unclear, and too front-loaded, as many listed companies define the indicator differently.

I don’t think this is a standard way of looking at it at all. ARR usually includes all recurring revenue, both recognized and unrecognized. In Qt’s case, it is likely almost entirely recognized revenue, but I don’t think that makes the metric unclear.

Thanks Antti! Your answer clarified the interpretation of the “ARR metric,” at least for me. I understand it such that licenses actually need to be recognized as revenue in their entirety immediately for the whole license period once the delivery is binding for the customer and there is no uncertainty regarding payment. In my opinion, the confusion arose because the ARR metric is generally presented to describe the recurring portion of sales that has not yet been recognized as revenue. Thus, for some investors, the interpretation of this key figure may remain unclear. In itself, I understand well that using even this applied “ARR metric” makes it easier to analyze revenue development.

Yes, this is explained by the inclusion of IAR; it was not included in Q4 and was included in Q1 (and was also added to that Q4 comparison figure).  Q4:    Q1:

Valuations across the entire software product sector have largely come down for that reason this year. One could, of course, argue that Qt’s valuation has come down for other reasons compared to this group, but in my opinion, the link is quite clear. Here too, the underlying mechanism would be the same breaking of the growth story (AI destroying the product’s value)  even though Qt’s pricing has been pushed down for justified reasons as well: a major factor behind Qt’s weak growth has been the weaker cycle of product development investments by global device manufacturers.  A few words on ARR; I have been among those hoping for this reporting. It has been very difficult to get a handle on the business trend from Qt’s reported figures for as long as I have followed them. The timing of license deals varies between quarters, and the lengths of license periods have varied (1yr vs 3yrs). Additionally, distribution licenses are often recognized on a lump-sum basis, which has meant a clear discrepancy between reported revenue growth and the actual business growth trend. Reporting ARR neutralizes these varying factors, and through it, we can monitor the development of the company’s “license base” (i.e., what development would look like if Qt recognized products on a SaaS model monthly). For example, in Q1, the organic ARR growth of Qt’s products (excluding IAR) was +11.5% in comparable currencies.  Qt’s license revenue is indeed recurring in nature (because licenses expire), but this happens every 1 or 3 years, not monthly. Distribution licenses are then a slightly different beast—recurring in a way (as long as the customer’s product sales continue), but not as regularly. The best alternative for this “ARR metric” would have been reporting revenue directly using a SaaS model, but according to the company, this could not be done due to the product’s delivery method (one-time delivery, not continuous over the cloud like SaaS).
