This is revealed in a global survey commissioned by technology company Wärtsilä, which involved 225 top executives from the maritime industry. Over 90 percent of respondents expressed strong confidence in their ability to lead in the era of energy transition and adapt their businesses to changing circumstances. At the same time, uncertainty regarding technological solutions, fuel availability, talent retention, and regulatory developments complicates strategic decision-making. Nearly seven out of ten respondents reported that uncertainty makes it difficult to prioritize investments, and 42 percent identified balancing emission reduction investments with return on investment requirements as a key challenge. Despite these challenges, the report’s message is clear: delaying decisions is not a sustainable strategy. Instead, shipping companies must build flexibility and options into their investments so that they can adapt their operations as the energy transition progresses, when necessary. With measures such as the EU Emissions Trading System and FuelEU Maritime regulation making emission reduction capabilities an economic variable, Wärtsilä’s report highlights increasing business risks. Tightening regulations, fuel price volatility, and the development of technological solutions increasingly impact investment timing, fuel choices, and asset utilization. Misjudgments can affect long-term competitiveness and asset value. The survey results are compiled in Wärtsilä’s new report, At the helm in shipping – how to navigate regulation, risk and ROI. The report examines how shipping companies are responding to the increasing complexity of regulations and the pressure to balance compliance, investments, and the demands of daily operations. The survey was answered by 225 maritime industry leaders, including CEOs, COOs, and shipping company owners. The report also emphasizes the importance of long-term partnerships between shipping companies and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Collaboration provides access to operational data, technical expertise, and lifecycle information, creating opportunities for proactive maintenance and data-driven asset management. This ensures vessel performance and asset value in the long term. As environmental requirements evolve and the ability to reduce emissions becomes more strongly linked to business results, it is crucial to continue developing vessels’ energy efficiency and operational performance to ensure compliance and returns on investments.

The company did not yet see significant impacts from the Middle East conflict, but if the situation prolongs, cost inflation could negatively affect customer activity and the global economy. The company emphasized that its orderbook deliveries are spread over a longer-than-usual period, which we interpret as limiting short-term growth. On the other hand, the company seemed quite confident about its long-term growth outlook, especially regarding the order outlook for Energy. There was a meeting between Big Tech and Trump at the White House yesterday; I read a New York Times article (paywall, https://www.nytimes.com/2026/03/04/climate/data-centers-electricity-trump.html). As I understand it, the results remained somewhat vague, but the tech companies building data centers committed voluntarily to providing additional capacity in connection with their centers. A couple of quotes from the piece: “Yet the pressure will keep building. Data centers today use around 5 percent of U.S. electricity, and that could grow to as much as 17 percent by 2030 as interest in A.I. grows, according to the Electric Power Research Institute.” “At the White House event on Wednesday, Mr. Trump said that under the new ratepayer protection pledge, tech companies would pay for any power plants and grid upgrades needed for their data centers and willingly pay higher rates. “They’re going to be producing massive amounts of electricity and energy on the grid, so the American consumers aren’t going to have to even think about it, and your electric costs are going to be going down,” Mr. Trump said.” Energy researcher Abe Silverman (Johns Hopkins University): “Talk is cheap, power plants are expensive,” Mr. Silverman said. “The big question is whether, after making these big commitments at the White House, we’re going to see Big Tech show up in the halls of Harrisburg and Annapolis and Trenton and actually walking the walk. The aim of the changes is to increase operational efficiency, strengthen expertise, and ensure the company’s global competitiveness and strong position for long-term growth. As part of the plans, Wärtsilä intends to reorganize and right-size its finance functions and establish an internal service center in Gdańsk, Poland. This service center would complement the expertise of the corresponding center located in Vaasa. As the plans may lead to a reduction in finance positions, Wärtsilä is initiating change negotiations regarding its finance organization. The estimated reduction need is a maximum of 205 positions globally, of which approximately 110 are in Finland. Simultaneously, there are plans to create approximately 130 new positions, about 30 of which would be in Finland. The number of new positions as well as potential redundancies and other alternative measures will be confirmed during the change negotiations.
