Tokmanni Group is a variety discount retailer in the Nordics. The group has stores in Finland, Sweden and Denmark under the brand names Tokmanni, Dollarstore, Big Dollar, Click Shoes and Miny. In addition, Tokmanni has online stores. Tokmanni's headquarter and logistics centres are located in Mäntsälä, Finland. Dollarstore is headquartered in Kista, Stockholm with a central warehouse in Örebro. The group own a procurement company located in Shanghai together with a Norwegian discount store chain Europris.

Comment on the development of the retail sector, where @Olli_Vilppo revealed his preliminary earnings outlook  : https://www.inderes.fi/analyst-comments/kotimainen-kauppa-kasvoi-syyskuussa Market Growth for Tokmanni Weak in September The turnover of department store and hypermarket chains of the Finnish Grocery Trade Association’s member companies continued to grow by 3% overall in September compared to the previous year. However, this growth was now purely driven by food sales, which increased by 5.3%. For Tokmanni, where the share of food products is relatively small, the development of non-food sales in department store and hypermarket chains is a clearly more relevant metric to follow. Regarding non-food items, turnover now decreased by 1.2% in September, whereas earlier in August, the same market grew by 2.1% and in July, it grew by 7.3%. We currently forecast Tokmanni segment’s turnover to grow by 4% in Q3, which, after a weak September, is slightly above the development of the Finnish non-food market in July-September. However, we do not see significant pressure for changes in our forecasts based on this, as despite our sales growth forecasts, we expect a small decline in earnings for Q3 in Finland. This is particularly due to the fact that the margin structure of the brisk growth achieved in July has, in our papers, been weaker than the comparison period, as the delay in the season has necessitated accelerating inventory reduction with discounts. We also believe that the company’s fixed costs have increased, similar to the last quarter, in terms of marketing expenses, as efforts are made to boost sales.

But in Tokmanni’s case, the result depends on the week, as it has a campaign-driven business model (Citymarket also has this, and Rusta). Normal has the same prices week after week, so it performs well in price comparisons. Purchases made at Normal are very small, as one often goes through the labyrinth without buying anything. Package sizes are such that you can get campaign products cheaper elsewhere, and the products are such that you don’t need to buy them every month, but can wait for campaigns.

I myself have shopped at Tokmanni stores near growth centers, and somehow lately, I’ve noticed a clear difference in that significantly more effort has been put into display and the quantity of goods. There’s more clarity and, above all, products that one actually buys. For example, if I used to completely bypass the mini selection, now you can find all sorts of nice things there, from pillows to plush toys, and not just makeup and other trinkets. But above all, while Lidl’s offers are mainly dismal (I’m referring to coupons), when you shop at Tokmanni, you find yourself buying basic necessities and often at a discount. Cat and dog food, tuna, baking sheets, chips, etc. And surprisingly, the last couple of times, I’ve spent as much money at Tokmanni as at Lidl, where the basic groceries for a family of four are bought once a week. The variation is probably significant from store to store, but there have certainly been enough people, and individual purchases seem to have increased.

It’s not a survey, but a price comparison that takes current prices into account.

Tokmanni often has brand weeks for Dove, Garnier, etc., during which prices are tens of percents cheaper than in that comparison. Normal prices were selected for the survey.

@peruspiensijoittaja posted an interesting Kaupan tila website comparison in the Kesko thread, where Normal was compared to Citymarket and Prisma. Tokmanni was also included in the same comparison to a limited extent. Limited because not many exactly same products could be found in Tokmanni’s and Normal’s selections. But in those that were found, Tokmanni was actually always the most expensive option.  Although that article doesn’t really discuss Tokmanni, one can read between the lines that Tokmanni is also in a bit of a difficult spot, as its selection and size (volumes) cannot compete with the S/K groups, and then smaller, more targeted category competitors also come to disrupt the market and take shares in their own sector.
