Metsä Board is a manufacturing company active in the paper and pulp industry. The company is a manufacturer of cartons made of forest fiber. The products are used for consumer and food products. In addition to the production of cartons, the company offers services related to technical analysis and design development. The company is most active in the European market. Metsä Board´s head office is located in Espoo, Finland.

According to the mill data sheets on Metsä Board’s website, it appears that every FBB mill already has the technical capability for sheeting. Perhaps the key driver here is to compete through service, especially in the Western European market (especially if sales volumes need to be shifted from the USA to Europe). This Konvertia appears to be a Finnish company that, according to its website, will still have capacity in Central and Eastern Europe in addition to its home market after this sale. I also don’t understand how they are still afloat. They must be covering variable costs and a bit more, but it can’t be at a sustainable level. Does anyone know better whether there are reasons other than so-called market economy factors involved? Norske has been weak for a long time, undergoing a transformation and selling assets. The removal of that capacity would be significant. Can any player really see a good future in graphic papers? That’s why the UPM and Sappi JV is a very smart move for capacity management if it materializes.

I don’t think so; rather, to my ear at first blush, it sounds like a typical move to raise the average price, as sheets typically fetch a better price than rolls and a service center likely also shortens delivery times for Central European customers. Sheeting doesn’t really even step on customers’ toes, at least not significantly, unlike carton manufacturing, for example. I also seem to recall that some 20 years ago, the then M-real had carton plants, which were divested during the restructuring surrounding the financial crisis.

Better than those Central European family-owned companies still hanging on, which are driving their solitary assets (one or two paper machines) toward the grave. They are on their last legs and on the brink of bankruptcy. At the other end of the spectrum is UPM, which has the economies of scale and the muscle to drive those one-machine family companies into bankruptcy.

I wonder how Norske is doing in the current environment? It’s been in a pretty bad way for a while now. Especially in paper..
