Orthex is a Finnish manufacturer and supplier of household products. The company offers products such as plastic storage boxes, cutting boards, pots, bowls and other kitchen accessories. The majority of the range is accessed digitally via the company's e-commerce platform, and the products are also offered through licensed retailers. The largest operations are found in the Nordic market.

During the spring, Orthex is testing reusable, deposit-based takeaway food containers and their return system in cooperation with K Group, S Group, and several other partners. During the pilot, customers at four stores will have the opportunity to choose a reusable container for takeaway food instead of a single-use one. The Kiertis experiment is based on the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), one of the objectives of which is to promote the reuse of packaging. The stores participating in the pilot are Prisma and Cittari in Sello (Leppävaara, Espoo), as well as Prisma and K-Supermarket in Lippulaiva (Espoonlahti).

Unfortunately, the earnings livestream was missed today due to a surprise fever. However, an interview with Rosenlew is coming up in the usual fashion. Revenue was clearly the weak link in the report, but with good cost discipline, the result met consensus expectations, so the overall picture is somewhat mixed. Cost discipline can only support earnings up to a certain point, so in Orthex’s case, revenue growth would be a more valuable (and sustainable) driver for earnings growth than cost control. Unfortunately, there are growth challenges in both the Nordics and other European markets. @Karhu_Hylje pointed out that growth doesn’t really seem to be taking off. This will play a critical role in the current year, as market confidence in growth must be earned back.

In 2020, the comparable EBIT margin was 17%, which was almost on target, but otherwise the company has fallen quite clearly short of it. With this track record, I don’t think the target is credible and would require significantly lower raw material prices than at present, which is of course out of the company’s control. Despite this, the company’s return on invested capital is at a very good level and growth is clearly value-creative (at least until investments in new production facilities are required). Since there is still capacity in the factories, I think the company could well be more aggressive regarding growth in Europe and allocate a slightly larger portion of its earnings to growth investments instead of dividend distribution, thereby targeting higher growth. As for the company’s growth track, growth has also fallen short of targets in recent years, but in my eyes, the company has been a prisoner of weak consumption in the Nordics, as 80% of sales still come from there. Personally, I’m ready to attribute 2022-2024 to the weak consumer business environment based on the drastically weakened consumer purchasing power and poorly developed retail sales indicators. However, last year can no longer be explained away by the weakened macro environment in the same way. Of course, increased credit risks limited the company’s development in European growth markets, but now it’s critical for the narrative to start producing evidence of growth instead of excuses.  The company has never disclosed who the customer in question is, but based on the publicized customers, I have a guess that fits the description well.   It hasn’t been mentioned how much comes from this large customer, but since they aren’t systematically seeking growth outside of Europe, I would guess this customer accounts for the lion’s share of sales outside of Europe.

Profitability is good, supported by lower raw material prices, but revenue development is indeed disappointingly sluggish. There is also uncertainty regarding raw material prices for this year due to the situation in Iran. The decline in revenue was 2.8% year-on-year. Orthex’s profitable growth doesn’t really seem to be taking off.

October–December 2025   Invoiced sales were EUR 23.0 million (24.4)   Net sales decreased by 6.6% and were EUR 22.3 million (23.9)   Adjusted EBITDA was EUR 4.3 million (4.2)   Adjusted EBITA was EUR 3.0 million (3.0), i.e., 13.6% of net sales (12.7)   Operating profit was EUR 3.0 million (2.7)   Cash flow from operating activities was EUR 2.5 million (2.4)   Earnings per share, undiluted, was EUR 0.12 (0.10)   January–December 2025   Invoiced sales were EUR 89.6 million (92.3)   Net sales decreased by 2.8% and were EUR 87.2 million (89.7)   Adjusted EBITDA was EUR 14.7 million (14.6)   Adjusted EBITA was EUR 9.8 million (10.2), i.e., 11.3% of net sales (11.4)   Operating profit was EUR 9.8 million (9.8)   Cash flow from operating activities was EUR 12.3 million (11.8)   Net debt / adjusted EBITDA was 1.1x (1.4x)   Earnings per share, undiluted, was EUR 0.38 (0.34)   The Board of Directors proposes a dividend of EUR 0.23 per share (0.22), totaling approximately EUR 4.1 million (3.9). Thomas has written a new company report following the release of the Q4 results  Orthex’s Q4 profitability was at a good level, but weak revenue development turned the report toward the disappointing side. The weak revenue is partly explained by timing factors, but contracted sales outside the Nordics eroded the credibility of the European growth story. The situation in the Middle East increases forecast risk for Orthex, which is sensitive to the prices of oil-based raw materials. However, a moderate valuation level (P/E 12x, EV/EBIT 10x on actual figures) keeps us constructive on the stock. We reiterate our Accumulate rating but revise our target price to EUR 5.3 (prev. EUR 5.5). Price development of plastic raw materials is now very difficult to predict Orthex utilizes oil-based raw materials in its production, the price of which typically correlates with the oil price with a lag. As a result of the escalated situation in the Middle East, oil future prices have recently risen by over 20%, which, if the situation continues, may also raise contract prices for key raw materials for Orthex with a delay. In connection with the update, we have slightly lowered the gross margin in our forecasts for Q2 and Q3, but for now, we are not modeling in a significant price spike. Orthex survived the significant cost inflation spike of 2022 with minimal damage (EBIT margin dipped to 6%. Generally, the company’s strong balance sheet makes it more resilient than many competitors and can open up interesting acquisition opportunities. In any case, a larger wave of cost inflation would cause downward pressure on our forecasts and make it more difficult to advance the growth strategy.
